The older students prepared for the Okuma Town Children’s Assembly by thinking about issues facing the town. After visiting the town hall for a preliminary survey and observing an actual assembly, the big day finally arrived. They reviewed proper manners and procedures for the assembly, and five representative students posed questions during the session. Watched by parents and local designers in the audience, the students proudly fulfilled their roles as young council members.

They asked questions from a junior high school student’s perspective about topics such as the operation of demand taxis and community buses, attracting new stores, the display of railway cars at the roadside station, and the expansion of schools. Because they live in Okuma Town, they were able to share genuine thoughts and concerns, making this a valuable opportunity to reflect once again on the town’s reconstruction and future.

~Reflections~

  • “It was my first time participating in a town assembly. I was worried because I didn’t know the proper etiquette, but I’m glad I was able to demonstrate what I had learned during the actual session.”
  • “Through the assembly, I was able to broaden the scope and perspective of the research I had been doing.”

Afterward, the town council members shared their comments, bringing the day of the Children’s Assembly to a close.

“Your manners and behavior were excellent. You asked questions with the wish to make your families, friends, and those around you happy. I hope you continue to learn so that you can bring happiness to yourself and the people around you.”

“I told you it was okay to make mistakes, but during the session, you spoke clearly and confidently. Once again, I was reminded that the students of Yumenomori are strong when it matters most. I hope you make use of this experience when thinking about your future and in many other ways. Please continue to take interest in town affairs and community issues.”

Not only on the day of the event but also throughout the prior research and preparation, we received tremendous support from many people. We are truly grateful for everyone’s help.
