Students unveil tote bags to be donated to children in Okuma Town 4/21 (Mon) 16:19 (Fukushima Minpo)
Forty-five first-year students from the Tokyo University of the Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Design, have created tote bags to give to children at 「Manabiya Yumenomori」, a compulsory education facility in Okuma town, Fukushima prefecture. The bags were unveiled at 「the Wind and Rock CARAVAN Fukushima」, held in Shimogo town on the 19th. They will be donated via the Fukushima Minpo newspaper at a later date. This was the first assignment the students undertook since enrolling in the school. With the children of Okuma town, who are still in the process of recovering from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident under their minds, each student created a bag that expressed their own individuality. Adachi Mirei said, “I drew a kitten and a pacific saury with the image of the Hamadori sea in mind. I want to support them in any way I can. The Wind Rock CARAVAN Fukushima is planned and run by creative director Yanai Michihiko, a professor at Tokyo University of the Arts and a native of Koriyama City. The students participated as part of a training trip. Mr.Yanai and the students also had the opportunity to talk to the children of Yumenomori by phone.
“It’s cute!” “The material is nice,” “It feels nice to the touch,” “The embroidery is fluffy,” “Yay!” Some kids even showed us the lining and said, “The inside is cute, too.”

“I like fruit and I thought it was cute, so I chose it. I liked the fact that it had all kinds of fruit on it.”
“I was happy that I was able to choose it first. I want to put my study materials in it and use it for various things.”
There were so many wonderful designs that even the adults wanted them. Thank you to the first-year students in the design department.
