We held a “Meet the World” session to connect with people from around the globe.
This time, we spoke via Zoom with guests from three countries: the United States, Ukraine, and Thailand.
Our students shared information about Ōkuma Town and asked questions about each country’s food culture and the issues they are currently facing. It was a great opportunity for cultural exchange and global learning.

We learned that one of the major issues in the United States is the rising cost of housing—so many people can’t afford a place to live. From Thailand, we heard that air pollution is a serious problem, with high levels of PM2.5 in the air making it very hard to breathe.

Our guest from Ukraine showed us photos and said, “I want you to learn about Ukraine as it works to recover from the war.”

  • I used to think that the United States was a rich country, so I was surprised to learn that many people there live in poverty.
  • I asked a question about what is being done to reduce poverty. I learned that while there are some financial support systems for people without money, it’s difficult to support everyone.
  • I asked what they like to do. They said they enjoy making clothes, reading adventure books, and playing games. I was surprised to hear that they like making clothes! I want to talk with people from around the world online again.
  • I learned that rent in the U.S. is very expensive. Since rent and prices are also going up in Japan, I started to feel a bit worried.
  • I imagined the beaches in California to be tropical, but I was surprised to hear that the climate is actually dry.
  • It had been a while, but I really enjoyed the session. I’m looking forward to meeting people from other countries next time.
  • I learned about the Chernobyl nuclear accident.
