[Daily Records] Creating Our Bon Odori Together!
In preparation for the upcoming Sports Festival, practice sessions for the traditional Bon Odori (Bon dance) musical performance have officially begun!
This year, a passionate group of student volunteers has stepped up to take on the challenge of mastering traditional Japanese instruments, including the taiko drums and the shinobue (bamboo flute). Utilizing their lunch breaks and after-school hours, they have been steadily building their skills step-by-step.
We are incredibly fortunate to welcome members of the “Kumagawa Bon Odori Association” to our practices. They have been kindly and patiently coaching the children on everything from catching the rhythm to drumming techniques and producing the perfect sounds.
Reviving History: Connecting the Sound of the Past to the Future
Interestingly, even before the Great East Japan Earthquake, local school children used to perform the music for the town’s Bon Odori.
As our students learn directly from the community elders today, you can truly feel that historical sound and rich cultural heritage being passed down and connected to the children of the present generation.
Among the ensemble members, the diversity of experiences shines through: one student previously played the taiko drums before transferring to Yumenomori, while another has already been practicing the shinobue flute during our “Future Design Time.”
Learning Through Collaboration and Encouragement
During the high-energy sessions, the children can be seen practicing with immense dedication, naturally calling out to support one another:
“This part is tricky!” “Let’s try it one more time together!”
Although they initially struggled to sync their beats, their rhythms are gradually aligning, and it is beautifully starting to sound like a cohesive performance.
We cannot wait to hear the magical music they will bring to life on the actual day of the Sports Festival!
