Students in grades 5 to 7 participated in a science class hosted by Mebae Tekijuku. They took on the challenge of building pasta bridges using candy, chocolate, and gummies as adhesives. Each pair received 20 pieces of pasta to work with. While assembling the bridge, they had to think carefully about which types of food would best hold the pasta together.

“The candy stretches when it’s thin, and it gets sticky,” they observed as they used warmed candy and gummies.
“At first, I didn’t know how to start, but it was great that we could figure it out together. We placed marbles on the completed bridge. We couldn’t fit 150 marbles, but we managed to put many on, and it was really fun.”
“It was something I hadn’t done much before, so it was really fun. Making things out of food was a valuable experience.”

“At first, I thought we could make the bridge using only the stickiness of the candy. After struggling to connect the pieces, we used a glue gun. We held a tournament with everyone, and it was fun to see bridges in all kinds of shapes. I realized that supporting the bridge properly takes some clever thinking.”
“It was my first time doing this, and I didn’t know how to start, but the high school students taught us how to make it, so it was really fun. I also enjoyed talking with the high school students.”

“We placed marbles on the completed bridge. I was a bit doubtful whether it could hold 150 marbles (about 1 kg), but it held up perfectly, so I was really happy.”

We learned that bundling and reinforcing the pasta makes it much stronger. It was a valuable experience using food as an adhesive. Thank you to everyone at Mebae Tekijuku!
