1. Off to Hiroshima! A Journey Through the Skies from Sendai Airport
Early in the morning, our students departed from the school, their hearts filled with anticipation and a touch of nervous excitement. It was a little chilly in the morning, but the enthusiasm was high.
We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all the parents and guardians who cooperated with the early-morning drop-offs and luggage preparations. Thank you so much for your support!
With an energetic wave to the teachers seeing them off, the bus headed straight for Sendai Airport. After arriving at the airport, everyone completed check-in and boarded the plane. Both teachers and students looked incredibly happy.
For many students, this was their very first time flying. When the plane took off, the cabin briefly erupted into cheers—and perhaps a few tiny shrieks! The aircraft featured a special Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles design, adding to the excitement.
As we gazed out at the brilliant blue sky piercing through the clouds, the flight progressed smoothly, and in what felt like the blink of an eye, we arrived in the historic land of Aki—Hiroshima!
2. Visiting Miyajima & Itsukushima Shrine: A Delightful Lunch and Shopping
Upon arriving in Hiroshima, we met our bus tour guide and boarded the bus. Our first stop was Miyajima, renowned as one of Japan’s most scenic landmarks.
As we crossed over to the island on the ferry, everyone was buzzing with excitement on board. We were greeted by the calm waters of the Seto Inland Sea, the iconic Grand Torii Gate standing tall in the water, and the majestic, solemn beauty of Itsukushima Shrine.
A Lively Lunch at a Historic Island Restaurant
Our hungry students were eagerly looking forward to lunch, which was hosted at “Toriia,” a famous long-established restaurant on Miyajima. The tonkatsu (pork cutlet) was a huge hit!
Having been active since the very early hours of the morning, the students ate with incredible enthusiasm. The spacious dining room allowed them to eat at a relaxing pace, beautifully soothing their travel fatigue.
Connecting with History & Remembering Loved Ones While Shopping
After lunch, we visited and paid our respects at the main pavilion of Itsukushima Shrine, a registered World Heritage Site. The shrine was bustling with many tourists, and our students were desperately trying to capture the stunning views on camera.
After being completely awed by the beauty of the historic architecture, it was finally time for the highly anticipated sightseeing and shopping portion of the day. Along the approach to the shrine, students were busy picking out souvenirs while carefully budgeting their pocket money.
It was truly moving to see them picking out gifts so seriously and joyfully, keeping the faces of their beloved family members foremost in their minds. They also had a wonderful time making friends with the wild deer along the way! As expected, the famous Momiji Manju (maple-leaf-shaped bean jam buns) turned out to be the most popular choice.
3. Memories Woven through “Atomic Bomb Drawings”: Connecting with Motomachi High School Students
Leaving Miyajima behind, our next destination was Motomachi High School, located in the heart of Hiroshima City. Here, we held one of the core highlights of this trip: a special exchange program with the high school students enrolled in the school’s General Course Creative Expression Program.
High School students Paint Memories of the Atomic Bombing with Sincere Devotion
The students at Motomachi High School participate in a profound project called “Atomic Bomb Drawings.” Working hand-in-hand with atomic bomb survivors (hibakusha), they paint the vivid scenes of the bombing based on the survivors’ testimonies. Some students even chose to enter this high school specifically to take part in this vital activity.
The high school students explained their process with intense devotion. Over the course of a long year, they interview the survivors repeatedly to gather meticulous details. They redraw the paintings over and over again, striving to accurately and faithfully recreate the tragic scenes of that day so that the historical truth is never lost.
An Encounter with the Authentic: A Five-Senses Prayer for Peace
Our students were deeply moved by the passion and earnest attitude of these high school students—peers from a slightly older generation—who hold paintbrushes to empathize with the survivors and pass those vital memories down to the future. Every single student was completely captivated by the high school students stories.
Watching the high school students speak so passionately about artwork that was sometimes painful to look at made our students view them as individuals possessing an incredible sense of resolve and purpose, far beyond their years.
Some of our students stood completely still, staring intently at the paintings. This was truly an “encounter with the authentic”—a priceless experience that allowed them to feel the supreme value of peace with all five senses.
4. A Fulfilling Day 1 Ends: Looking Forward to Tomorrow’s Journey
After gaining immense inspiration and deep learning from these profound encounters, the group arrived safely at our lodgings. First up was a wonderful, lively dinner together!
After enjoying their meal, the students returned to their rooms to fill out their reflection journals and take baths, spending the rest of the evening strengthening their bonds of friendship.
With a long travel distance and a full day of utilizing both their minds and bodies to the fullest, a highly rewarding Day 1 came to a successful close.
In our next post, we will bring you the updates from Day 2 of the school trip. Please look forward to it!
